If I had to pick a defining moment in my life, I'd have a lot of defining moments to chose from. There have been many and they all added something to the sum total of me. But if I had to pick one moment that changed my life and sent it in a new direction more than all the rest. One day stands out among the many. One day two summers ago I was pulled over by a Michigan state police officer. Someone had called me in and said I was swerving in my lane and the cop pulled me over to give me a sobriety test. I had been drinking the night before but that was ten hours before so I was pretty sure I couldn't be intoxicated still. I was wrong. All my life I'd heard 'Don't drink and drive'. I never heard a T.V. commercial that said 'Don't drink and drive the next day'. I guess maybe my math needed a little work. I said to myself at that moment 'I'm gonna quit drinking'. But I still didn't quite get it. I was thinking something like 'I'm gonna quit drinking the first day of next week. Not until the next day when my probation officer told me that Baraga county may charge me with reckless endangerment of a minor child did the light come on. At that moment the blood ran out of my face as fear gripped my stomach.
