This book is about Russia’s relationship with China and the West in the central zone of Eurasia. After the crash of the Soviet empire Russia would like to be in Central Asia and the Caspian but wishes to keep the West out, and the new independent states down. How can this policy be explained? How does Russia hope to achieve these aims? Does it have sufficient resources to implement such ambitious goals? Will Moscow add China to the list of those who must be squeezed out of these regions? To answer these questions the author explores the role of these regions in the Eurasian economic and strategic landscapes sources of instability and active forces of Russia’s policy and its relationship with the West and China. Detailed analysis of these factors allows the author to develop scenarios of the future relationship between Russia, China, and the West in Central Asia and the Caspian.
